Redwoods of Northern California

After returning from Texas to work the Byron Nelson, we headed up the California coast to see the huge redwoods. We drove up along highway 101 taking a scenic drive through the "Avenue of the Giants" (see our little car).

Then we headed to the Redwoods National Park and Jedidiah State park. We stayed in an RV park in Arcata, CA., just north of Eureka. We stopped short of driving into Oregon and decided to make that another trip at another time.

The redwoods are spectacular. Some of them are thousands of years old.
Standing next to a redwood makes a person feel very insignificant.

On our way up the highway, we came across some elk along the roadside. Then after stopping at the visitor's center, we met Nancy and Robert. (See the four of us inside a big tree). We both saw some elk and noticed each other on the highway. We decided to meet at a trail head for a hike in the redwoods. We only hiked with them that one time, but we seemed to hit it off quickly. We hope to see them again sometime along our travels.

After spending one week in the area, we fell in love with the redwood forests. The hikes we took were on the most beautiful trails we had ever hiked. It was like traveling though an enchanted forest! Notice the picture of Joni hiding behind a huge tree - she looks like a tiny red spot. Many trees were fallen and the roots were very visible. See Delton standing next to a toppled tree with roots exposed. The roots don't go down very deep into the ground, but they spread out and intertwine with other redwoods, giving them stability. They also withstand bug infestation, as they seem to repel bugs.
